Nicholas Bhusal released on Rs 50,000 bail

KATHMANDU: Nicholas Bhusal, who had been in police custody since Kartik 18 for allegedly making statements that threatened public peace and security, was released on Tuesday after paying a bail of Rs 50,000, Kathmandu police spokesperson SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai confirmed.

On Monday, a bench of Supreme Court justices Nahakul Subedi and Nripdhoj Niraula ordered that Bhusal be released on bail or temporary release, directing the necessary procedures to be followed.

Bhusal was arrested by police on Kartik 18 from Saraswati Ashram in Rani Ban, Gorkha, after he reportedly stated on the Sambad Dabali program on Kartik 13 that he would destroy key national institutions, including the police, through explosives.

Bhusal’s petition for release argued that his arrest violated his freedom of expression and personal liberty. The court noted that since his statement had been recorded and there was no need to keep him in custody for further investigation, he could be released.

After paying the bail, Bhusal was released under the supervision of his family. Previously, when arrested for allegedly using drugs, he had also been released on the condition of family supervision and referral to a rehabilitation center.
