KATHMANDU: Press Council Nepal has reported 59 incidents of press freedom violations over the past three months.
According to the Council, between mid-July and mid-October, the highest number of cases involved assaults and attacks, totaling 34. Similarly, there were 10 cases of threats and misconduct, eight cases of professional insecurity, five of obstruction or seizure, and two of policy restrictions.
Council spokesperson and senior administrative officer Deepak Khanal said that Bagmati Province recorded the highest number of violations with 44 cases, followed by Madhesh Province with six, Lumbini with four, Koshi with three, and Sudurpaschim with one.
Based on gender, 43 male and three female journalists were found to be victims during this period.
Meanwhile, two incidents of press freedom misuse were also recorded — one each in Bagmati and Madhesh provinces.
A monitoring team from the Press Council recently conducted on-site assessments of the damages to media outlets in Kathmandu Valley during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, where several news offices were vandalized and set on fire.
