KATHMANDU: Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been chosen as the coordinator and Madhav Kumar Nepal as the co-coordinator of the newly formed Nepali Communist Party, created through the merger of ten communist parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist).
The decisions were made unanimously during the unity convention held at Bhrikutimandap on Wednesday.
The convention also endorsed the party’s interim statute and declared that all central committee members of the participating parties are now officially members of the unified Nepali Communist Party.
In the new structure, senior CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhalanath Khanal will hold the third-ranking position in the newly formed Nepal Communist Party.
According to party sources, the decision was finalized during a meeting held at Khumaltar on Wednesday morning, where Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ offered Khanal the third position in the party hierarchy.
Leaders close to Khanal said he decided to participate in the unification after Prachanda assured him of a respectful position. “Comrade Prachanda will lead the party, followed by Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Jhalanath Khanal will be placed third,” a senior leader told Khabarhub, adding that the agreement was reached during a meeting between Prachanda and Khanal on Wednesday morning.
Sources said Prachanda and Nepal had held lengthy discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday regarding Khanal’s role. Following those talks, Prachanda’s decision to give Khanal third priority convinced him to join the unified party.
