KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress central committee member Udaya Shamsher Rana has criticized the party leadership for failing to take a clear stance on the Sushila Karki-led interim government formed after the fall of the UML– Nepali Congress coalition.
Speaking at the ongoing central working committee meeting at the party’s headquarters in Sanepa on Wednesday, Rana expressed concern that the country’s largest political party had shifted its focus away from national politics. He urged the leadership to clarify its position on the current political situation.
“What is the Congress’ position in national politics? Where do we stand and in what condition?” he questioned, adding, “Since the interim government was formed on September 12, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other neighboring leaders have already extended congratulations twice. Diplomats and ambassadors have rushed to convey their greetings. Yet, our party remains silent without forming a clear opinion.”
Rana pointed out that the UML–Congress coalition government collapsed following the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, leading to the formation of the interim government under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. Referring to this, he asked why the Nepali Congress had not responded even when foreign leaders were acknowledging the new administration.
He also criticized the meeting for focusing only on the 15th General Convention and a possible Special Convention, without discussing pressing national issues. “Party cadres expect unity among leaders,” he said. “Our meeting has continued for days, but we have not discussed any of the major national agendas. Is this the only issue before us?”
Rana remarked that while the UML has already defined its political direction and the Maoist Center is moving ahead by uniting with smaller left parties, the Nepali Congress’ indecision is problematic. He added that the Rastriya Swatantra Party is actively engaging in talks to expand its influence, while the Nepali Congress remains confused.
He also questioned the party’s silence even after Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba was attacked at his residence during the Gen-Z movement protests in Bhadra.
Rana further cautioned against calling a Special General Convention, saying, “A special convention would be like being trapped in the Chakravyuh of the Mahabharata, once we enter, we cannot get out. We must decide not to go that way.”
