Bancharedanda locals bar garbage dumping, demand implementation of past agreement

KATHMANDU: Locals of Bancharedanda landfill site have warned that they will not allow garbage dumping in the area until previous agreements are fully implemented.

During a discussion held at the Ministry of Urban Development on Friday, the locals said that despite repeated agreements, none of the commitments had been enforced, prompting them to bar waste disposal from Kathmandu Valley.

They have demanded a joint meeting with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s mayor and deputy mayor, the Minister for Urban Development, and representatives from the Ministry of Finance to resolve the issue. However, Friday’s meeting ended without any conclusion due to the locals’ firm stance.

Urban Development Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel urged the locals not to obstruct garbage trucks, assuring that the ministry is committed to resolving the matter through dialogue.

The residents have accused authorities of failing to implement the 18-point agreement reached on June 9, 2022. The agreement included provisions to dump waste only at night, control foul odor, and ensure garbage trucks prevent leachate leakage.

Locals have since stopped garbage trucks from the Valley, demanding that the government honor the commitments made more than two years ago.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has urged residents to temporarily store household waste at home due to disruptions at the Bancharedanda landfill site.
