Sudurpaschim Province Assembly session remains in limbo

KAILALI: The future of the Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly meeting remains uncertain as repair and management work on the assembly building — damaged during the Gen-Z demonstration on September 9 — has yet to begin.

According to the Secretariat of the Provincial Assembly, the meeting cannot be convened because the damaged infrastructure has not been restored, and no alternative venue has been arranged.

Speaker Bhim Bahadur Bhandari said discussions are underway regarding the building’s maintenance and the procurement of essential materials. “The assembly hall’s tables, chairs, computers, and laptops were completely destroyed by fire. A meeting environment can only be created once these are replaced,” he noted.

During the protest, the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, subject committee offices, and party offices within the assembly premises were also set ablaze. The fire destroyed six four-wheelers and five motorcycles, causing an estimated Rs 120 million (Rs 12 crore) in damages.

Secretariat Secretary Dev Bahadur Bogti said a shortage of resources has delayed maintenance and technical restoration work. He estimated that at least Rs 5 million will be required to repair the assembly hall and replace essential equipment.

The last Provincial Assembly meeting was held on August 5. According to Information Officer Yuvraj Jaisi, four bills are currently under consideration, and the assembly session remains formally active despite the halt in proceedings.
