KATHMANDU: The government is marking the 45th World Food Day today with the aim of raising public awareness about the global importance of clean, nutritious, and balanced food.
The Department of Agriculture is leading the celebration in coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Agriculture for Food Campaign, and other partner organizations.
This year, the event is being observed under the theme “Hand in Hand for Clean Food and a Happy Future.” A main organizing committee, chaired by Prakash Kumar Sanjel, Director General of the Department of Agriculture, has been formed to oversee the celebrations.
Director General Sanjel stated that various activities are being planned to mark the occasion, including exhibitions of food items, awareness programs, and the publication and broadcast of informative materials such as posters and messages.
He expressed hope that the day will help spotlight efforts aimed at uplifting food-insecure and hunger-affected communities.
In observance of the day, additional programs such as slogan-based interactions, article publications, and collaborations with national and international non-governmental organizations will also take place.
World Food Day is observed every year on October 16, commemorating the founding of the FAO. The day has been celebrated globally since 1981, following a resolution passed by the 20th General Assembly of the United Nations in November 1979, which declared October 16 as World Food Day.
