2,488 Congress representatives submit signatures demanding special convention

KATHMANDU: A total of 2,488 representatives from the Nepali Congress’ 14th General Convention have submitted signatures demanding a special convention of the party.

The signatures were handed over to Acting Party President Purna Bahadur Khadka at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Wednesday.

Congress leader Guru Raj Ghimire informed that 2,488 convention representatives had signed the petition demanding the special convention.

He said that according to Article 17(2) of the party statute, if 40 percent of the general convention representatives demand a special convention with stated reasons, the party must convene it within three months of receiving the petition.

Ghimire expressed hope that the central committee would make a proper decision on the matter. He argued that since the party had not shown initiative for the regular convention, the delegates had opened the way for a lawful one instead.

He also said that the special convention should be held within Mangsir (November–December) to prepare for the upcoming elections. Earlier, youth leaders from the Congress had launched a signature campaign to demand the special convention.
