Koshi Highway blocked for fifth day due to landslides

KATHMANDU: The Koshi Highway has remained obstructed for the past five days following landslides triggered by continuous rainfall, police authorities confirmed on Thursday.

According to the Police Headquarters, landslides in Sankhuwasabha have blocked two key sections of the highway: one at Varun in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality-4, and another at Ekua in Makalu Rural Municipality-3. Both stretches have been closed since September 21.

Similarly, the Pasang Lhamu Highway, which links Nepal with China via Rasuwagadhi, also remains disrupted. The Miteri Bridge in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality-2 was washed away by floods in the Lehende River in June and has yet to be rebuilt, Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General Binod Ghimire said.

Ghimire added that three other major highways blocked earlier this week have since reopened. “The Muglin–Narayanghat road section in Chitwan resumed two-way traffic on Thursday evening after a three-day disruption. Traffic has also resumed along the Mid-Hill Highway in Rukum East, the East-West Highway in Nawalparasi East, the Kaligandaki Corridor in Baglung, and the Trishuli–Mailung road in Rasuwa,” he said.

The Department of Roads further informed that the Araniko Highway, which connects Nepal with the Tatopani border point, has been operating one-way without interruption since Monday. The BP Highway has also remained free of obstructions.
