Blocked Beni–Jomsom road reopens

MYAGDI: The Beni–Jomsom–Korala road has reopened for vehicular movement after being blocked for two days due to a landslide.

The 76-kilometer route, which connects Beni in Myagdi to Mustang, was obstructed on Sunday morning following a landslide at Kavrebhir, located on the border of Annapurna Rural Municipality (Myagdi) and Thasang Rural Municipality (Mustang).

According to Assistant Inspector Min Bahadur Khatri of the Ghansa Police Post, the road was cleared at 10:00 pm on Monday with the support of the Nepali Army, who used explosives to break apart large boulders. The landslide debris was then removed using a bulldozer.

“Technical staff from the Beni–Jomsom–Korala Road Project Office, the Nepali Army, and security personnel worked late into the night to clear the road,” Khatri said.

“With the route reopened, vehicles that had been stranded in Ghansa (Mustang) and Kavre (Myagdi) have now resumed their journeys.”

The road closure had disrupted the movement of goods-laden containers from Korala border crossing and trucks transporting apples and potatoes from Mustang to various markets.

It also delayed the travel plans of pilgrims, tourists, and locals, many of whom were heading to Kagbeni in Mustang to offer Pitra Tarpan during Sohra Shraddha.
