705 prisoners re-arrested after Jhumka Prison break

SUNSARI: A total of 705 escaped prisoners have been re-arrested as of Monday evening following a mass breakout from Jhumka Prison in Ramdhuni Municipality-5, Sunsari.

The prison break occurred amid the chaos triggered by the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. According to Superintendent of Police Suman Kumar Timsina of the District Police Office, 1,572 inmates managed to escape after over 100 protesters stormed the prison on the night of September 9, causing extensive damage to the facility.

SP Timsina stated that, under pressure from external youth groups and threats of arson by inmates inside, the prison administration had eased security measures at the entrance to prevent further destruction. As a result, all but 227 inmates from two prison blocks managed to flee.

Among the escapees were all the foreign nationals incarcerated at the facility, including 65 Indian and other foreign prisoners. By Monday night, 705 escapees had been recaptured, and the search for the remaining fugitives is ongoing, SP Timsina confirmed.
