3,723 escaped prisoners rearrested across the country

KATHMANDU: A total of 3,723 escaped prisoners have been rearrested following the mass jailbreaks that occurred during the violent Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, according to Nepal Police.

Speaking at a press briefing, Nepal Police Central Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Binod Ghimire confirmed that 3,723 inmates have been taken back into custody as of noon today.

However, 10,320 prisoners remain at large, prompting police to urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any sightings or information to the nearest police or security office.

DIG Ghimire said some escapees were apprehended by Indian police while trying to cross the border and were subsequently returned. Others were arrested by the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force.

A few, he noted, voluntarily surrendered and returned to their respective prisons. A nationwide search operation is ongoing to locate the remaining escapees.

In addition to the prisoners, 139 detainees who had escaped from police custody across various districts during the unrest have also been rearrested. However, approximately 2,100 detainees are still missing, DIG Ghimire said.

The mass escapes occurred on September 9, amid widespread arson, vandalism, and violent protests linked to the broader Gen-Z movement, which has triggered political upheaval across the country.
