Cleanup and damage assessment begin at Singha Durbar after Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: Government employees have begun cleaning offices and compiling damage reports at the Prime Minister’s Office and several ministries that were ransacked and torched during the recent Gen-Z protests.

On Saturday, staff members returned to their respective ministries to clear debris and salvage what remained of files, furniture, and office equipment. Officials said efforts are also underway to secure documents and items spared from the arson. Vehicles parked inside ministry compounds were also destroyed in the violence.

The Prime Minister’s Office, badly damaged by fire, has been temporarily relocated to the newly constructed Home Ministry building. The Ministry of Health and Population, located outside the Singha Durbar complex, was completely gutted.

Singha Durbar, the country’s principal administrative hub, suffered widespread destruction. The Prime Minister’s Office, along with the Ministries of Home, Finance, and Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, all sustained significant damage in the protests.

Other ministries hit hard include Education, General Administration, Health, and Physical Infrastructure and Transport, as well as the National Vigilance Center.

Officials said a full inventory of the destruction is still underway. The scale of the losses, both in property and in crucial state documents, is expected to pose major challenges to the resumption of regular government functions.
