Rajendra Bajgain reports arson at hotel during GenZ protest

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader and former Member of the House of Representatives Rajendra Bajgain has reported that his hotel in Baluwatar, Varnabas Museum Hotel, was targeted and set on fire during the recent Gen-Z protests.

He claims that individuals, motivated by revenge, sent messages via social media instructing protestors to attack his property.

In a statement released Saturday, Bajgain said that despite publicly supporting the Gen-Z movement and opposing violence against innocent people, his hotel was vandalized.

“On September 9, despite my firm stance in favor of the youth and against violence, my hotel was damaged. Although the police had informed me that I was not specifically targeted, some revenge-driven individuals encouraged arson through social media messages, and the attack occurred around 3 p.m.,” he said.

Bajgain confirmed that he plans to rebuild and reopen the damaged hotel. “Some parts of the property were set on fire. While the damage is significant, I am preparing a responsible reconstruction plan and will make every effort to ensure continuity of the project,” he stated.

He also recalled resigning from his position as a member of the House of Representatives during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, citing dissatisfaction with the government’s excessive use of force. Despite his support for the movement, the hotel was still attacked, highlighting the intensity of retaliatory actions against perceived sympathizers.
