KATHMANDU: The Nepali Army opened fire after inmates at Dhading District Prison attempted to escape during an arson attack on Wednesday morning.
A 75-year-old man was killed in the firing. According to Dhading Hospital, two people are in serious condition and five others sustained minor injuries.
The army intervened to stop prisoners trying to break free, inspired by the recent release of Rastriya Swatantra Party chair Rabi Lamichhane from Nakkhu Prison. Inmates across the country have since attempted jailbreaks, demanding equal treatment.
Dhading prison also witnessed arson inside the compound, while a mob outside clashed with security forces. A heavy deployment of police and army surrounded the facility, with troops stationed even on rooftops. The Army had assumed national security command since Tuesday night and was deployed in force at the site.
