Arjun Narsingh KC calls Gen Z movement an outburst of public discontent

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC has described the ongoing Gen Z-led protests and the resulting political turmoil as an unorganized but collective expression of widespread public dissatisfaction, mistrust, and despair.

Writing on Facebook on Thursday, KC argued that the state and political leadership failed to recognize society’s dynamic pulse in time, leading to the current crisis.

“This two-day political storm is nothing but the unorganized and collective outburst of people’s discontent, mistrust, and despair,” he wrote.

KC stressed that the Gen Z generation represents Nepal’s future and cannot inherently be violent or destructive. Instead, he blamed the state’s brutal killings of young students for fueling frustration and giving space for anarchic and anti-social elements to exploit the movement.

Calling for reconciliation and a peaceful new political direction, KC outlined a seven-point proposal:

  1. Convene an all-party roundtable conference.
  2. Form a national unity government.
  3. Establish a powerful commission led by a former chief justice to investigate all major corruption scandals and ensure accountability.
  4. Probe Nepalis’ assets abroad and nationalize those amassed illegally.
  5. Engage in serious, result-oriented dialogue with Gen Z.
  6. Hold a referendum on constitutional amendments, following agenda set by the roundtable.
  7. Commit to building a corruption-free society, ending impunity, and ensuring good governance, core demands of Gen Z.

KC added that addressing the grievances of young people is vital for Nepal’s democratic stability and social cohesion.
