Parliament building set ablaze as Gen-Z protests escalate in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Protesters set fire to the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Tuesday afternoon as nationwide Gen-Z demonstrations escalated into violent confrontations with state authorities.

According to eyewitnesses, demonstrators breached security barriers and forced their way inside the parliamentary complex before torching parts of the building. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the premises as security forces scrambled to regain control.

The incident occurred despite an indefinite curfew imposed earlier in the day by the Kathmandu District Administration Office, which had prohibited all public movement, gatherings, and protests across the capital.

Protesters, however, defied the restrictions, spreading across the city and targeting both government institutions and the private residences of political leaders.

Over the past 48 hours, the Gen-Z-led movement has intensified following the deaths of at least 19 young demonstrators in Monday’s police crackdown. Since then, political party offices, ministers’ homes, and key state infrastructure have come under repeated attack.
