Toshima Karki and Sumana Shrestha resign as lawmakers in solidarity with Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: Two lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Dr. Tosima Karki and Sumana Shrestha, have resigned from the House of Representatives, expressing solidarity with the ongoing Gen-Z protests across Nepal.

Dr. Karki, who had announced her resignation earlier via social media, stated that she would formally submit her letter but wanted to publicly declare her withdrawal from the parliament that has become a puppet of this criminal and insensitive government with effect from September 9, 11:55 AM.

She added that she would no longer serve as a lawmaker elected in the 2022 elections, highlighting her support for the youth-led movement against government actions.

Following her, Sumana Shrestha also resigned from her parliamentary seat, sharing her decision on social media.

“The role of a lawmaker is to hold the government accountable, but the government has crossed all limits of accountability. In this situation, remaining a member of a parliament limited to managing the business of a genocidal government is morally unacceptable. That is why I am resigning from my position as a lawmaker,” she wrote.

Earlier, other RSP lawmakers, including Asim Sah, had also resigned in protest against the government’s handling of the Gen-Z demonstrations.

The resignations come amid nationwide unrest triggered by Monday’s Gen-Z protests, during which government forces attempted to suppress demonstrators, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
