LALITPUR: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said that Nepal’s Parliament is studying ways to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency in legislative and administrative functions.
Addressing the National Artificial Intelligence Conference organized by the Digital Media Foundation in Patan on Friday, Speaker Ghimire highlighted AI’s potential in supporting parliamentary committees, converting speech to text, and quickly retrieving and analyzing data related to bills and legislative documents.
He noted that necessary policy and legal frameworks are being prepared to both enable and regulate the use of AI. At the same time, challenges such as misinformation, hacking, and data security are being taken into account.
“The capacity of Parliament or the government alone will not suffice in formulating laws on such technical and complex issues,” Ghimire said, calling for active involvement of experts and stakeholders in shaping the country’s approach to AI.
Recalling that the government approved the National Artificial Intelligence Policy in August, the Speaker said its effective implementation would require close coordination between lawmakers, regulators, and the tech community.
