PM Oli returns home after attending SCO Summit

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli returned to Nepal today after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China. Oli led a 23-member Nepali delegation to Tianjin on August 30 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the visit, he held a bilateral meeting with President Xi and addressed the summit. Nepal has been a dialogue partner of the SCO since 2016.

Prachanda says current government run by brokers, not leaders

CPN (Maoist Center) Chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has called for intensified socialist movements and stronger commitments against violence toward women. Inaugurating the 7th National Conference of the All Nepal Women’s Association (Revolutionary) at Academy Hall, Kamaladi, Prachanda said he believed the conference would adopt a resolution against gender-based violence.

Govt asked to clarify its stance on China’s Global Security Initiative

CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Prakash Jwala has demanded a formal statement from the government regarding China’s claim that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has endorsed its Global Security Initiative (GSI). Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Jwala highlighted a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Oli. The statement claimed that Oli had pledged Nepal’s support for the GSI, a move Jwala said goes against Nepal’s non-aligned foreign policy.

94.5% work completed on Nagdhunga tunnel, set to open for travel after Tihar

Construction of the Nagdhunga tunnel, Nepal’s first modern highway tunnel, has reached 94.5 percent completion, with authorities preparing to open it for public use around the Tihar festival if work proceeds on schedule. The tunnel, located at the western gateway to the Kathmandu Valley, is being built under the Department of Roads with Japanese loan assistance. It is designed to bypass the steep, winding, and accident-prone Nagdhunga section, significantly easing travel in and out of the capital.

Govt warns unregistered social media platforms to comply by midnight or face shutdown

The government has said it will wait until midnight for social media companies to register in Nepal, warning that failure to comply could result in a shutdown.Last Thursday, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology issued a notice instructing all unr en days. The ultimatum expires today.

Language Commission calls for use of Nepali on embossed number plates

The Language Commission of Nepal has once again stressed the importance of using the Nepali language on embossed number plates for vehicles, citing constitutional and judicial precedent. The commission emphasized that the Constitution of Nepal, under Article 7 (1), designates the Nepali language, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language for government functions. The constitutional body, which is tasked with protecting and promoting the nation’s diverse languages, expressed its dissent over the current provision of using only the English language on the new vehicle number plates.

Nepal to kick off AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers against Tajikistan

Nepal will open its campaign in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers against host Tajikistan tonight. The match will take place at the Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe at 9:45 PM Nepali time. Nepal is drawn in Group ‘K’, alongside Tajikistan, the Philippines, and Syria. The Nepali team will face Syria in their second match on September 6 and the Philippines in the third match on September 9. Syria and the Philippines will play the opening match of the group before Nepal’s game.

UML moves to block debate on Bidya Devi Bhandari’s membership at statute convention

The CPN-UML appears set to prevent discussion at its upcoming statute convention on the party’s controversial decision to revoke the organizational membership of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, effectively barring her return to active politics. General Secretary Shankar Pokharel gave this indication on Wednesday while outlining preparations for the Second Statute Convention, scheduled for September 5–7 in Godavari, Lalitpur.

NEPSE down 15.64 points

The Nepali stock market continued its downward trend on Wednesday, with the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) falling by 15.64 points. This 0.57% decrease brought the NEPSE index to 2726.33. The day saw a trading volume of 11,345,994 shares worth Rs 4.72 billion.

Land Revenue Office official arrested with bribe money in Dhulikhel

Gyanendra Prasad Bhandari, a non-gazetted officer at the Land Revenue Office in Dhulikhel, Kavrepalanchok, was arrested today with a bribe of Rs 200,000. Bhandari was caught red-handed by a team from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). He had taken the bribe from a client to register a plot of land in their name. The land, located in the former Dolalghat Village Development Committee, Ward 7 of Kavre, was previously left unregistered in the field book.

Nepal Rastra Bank to withdraw Rs 50 billion from banking system

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is set to withdraw Rs 50 billion from the banking system on Wednesday due to excess liquidity. The central bank will collect the funds through a 25-day deposit instrument via an auction process. The principal amount along with interest will be repaid on September 28.

Binod Chaudhary tells govt to reinstate sugarcane subsidy

Nepali Congress Member of Parliament Binod Chaudhary has called on the government to honor the labor of sugarcane farmers by implementing farmer-friendly policies. Speaking during the zero hour of Wednesday’s House of Representatives meeting, he stated that the government should not back away from its own decisions and must immediately provide the long-standing subsidy to sugarcane farmers.

Swarnim Wagle to file complaint with cyber bureau over deepfake video

Dr. Swarnim Wagle, the vice chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is set to visit the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau to file a complaint against a deepfake video posted on social media. According to RSP spokesperson Manish Jha, Dr. Wagle will go to the Cyber Bureau with his complaint today.

RSP accuses ruling coalition of spreading deepfake audio

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Member of Parliament Hari Dhakal has accused the ruling coalition of resorting to spreading deepfake voice recordings of his party’s leaders because they are unable to engage in constructive debate in the House. Speaking at the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Dhakal claimed that instead of engaging in a productive discussion, the ruling side has been widely disseminating deepfake voice recordings of RSP leaders.

RSP and RPP continue to boycott HoR

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), have boycotted the House of Representatives meeting. They are demanding the formation of a judicial or parliamentary committee to investigate the visit visa scandal, which allegedly involves Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

HoR receives Civil Service Bill with amendments

The National Assembly has sent a report with amendments to the Federal Civil Service Bill, which directly relates to the country’s administrative federalism. According to Federal Parliament Secretariat spokesperson Ekram Giri, the report containing the National Assembly’s amendments was sent to the House of Representatives today after completing the necessary procedures.

Bagmati CM directs coordinated measures to improve traffic management in Kathmandu

Bagmati Province Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya has instructed concerned authorities to make traffic management in the Kathmandu Valley more efficient and effective. Chairing a meeting on traffic management in the valley, CM Baniya stressed the need for all relevant agencies to work in a coordinated manner to reduce road accidents and streamline traffic operations.

Cholera outbreak in Birgunj coming under control

The cholera and diarrhea outbreak in Birgunj is showing signs of easing, with an increasing number of patients recovering and returning home. According to the Parsa District Health Office, as of Tuesday evening, 934 diarrhea patients had been admitted to hospitals, of whom 862 have recovered and been discharged. Seventy-two patients remain under treatment.

Sudurpaschim CM meets NRB Governor ahead of investment conference

Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah met with Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel on Wednesday at Baluwatar. The meeting focused on discussions related to the upcoming Sudurpaschim Province Investment and Development Conference-2025, which the provincial government plans to hold on November 17–18.

Two children injured as microbus hits pedestrians in Kathmandu

Two children were injured on Putalisadak in Kathmandu after being struck by a microbus on Wednesday. According to Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police, Apilraj Bohara, the microbus bearing registration number Ba. Pra. 01–002 Cha 8322 hit the pedestrians.

Gold price continues to break records in Nepal

The price of gold in Nepal surged to a record high on Wednesday. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of hallmark gold reached Rs 207,900 per tola, up by Rs 2,000 compared to Tuesday.

37 Nepalis deported from the US to arrive in Kathmandu today

A total of 37 Nepali nationals deported from the United States are scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on Wednesday via a chartered flight, marking the third such deportation this year. Ram Chandra Tiwari, Director General of the Department of Immigration, confirmed that official communication has been received regarding the repatriation of the deportees on a special flight.
