JHAPA: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairperson Rajendra Lingden has called for the continuation of citizenship by descent for Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs).
Speaking at a press conference organized by the party’s district committee in Birtamod today, Lingden argued that maintaining this provision is essential to strengthen the connection of the Nepali diaspora to Nepal’s development and prosperity.
“Nepal exists beyond its geographic borders. The Nepalis living abroad may be outside the country’s territory, but they still care deeply about Nepal,” he said.
Lingden criticized the amendment to the Citizenship Act introduced after the political changes of 2006, which bars dual citizenship. He said the change has adversely affected many Nepali citizens of descent who have gone abroad for employment, education, and other opportunities.
