Library essential for developing reading culture: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has emphasized the need for well-managed and well-equipped libraries at the local, provincial, and federal levels, with strong legal frameworks, sufficient budget, and technological integration. He said libraries play a crucial role in fostering a reading culture.

Speaking at a program organized by the Library Day Main Celebration Committee on the occasion of the 18th Library Day in Kathmandu, Minister Gurung highlighted that libraries are not merely book storage spaces but are centers of education, research, and social transformation.

“Disparity in access to knowledge between urban and rural areas has created a significant gap. Libraries should be redefined as centers for the overall development of society,” said Gurung, who also serves as the government spokesperson.

He stressed that even in the digital age, libraries remain highly relevant. “Libraries are empowering citizens by providing access to digital resources, e-books, research materials, and a safe learning environment. They are now hubs for research, innovation, and skill development,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, library advocate Indira Dali called for the formulation of a Library Act to ensure the establishment of public libraries at the local level. She also advocated for the inclusion of children’s rooms in every library to encourage early reading habits.

On the occasion, Gyanudaya Library and Information Centre, librarian Jagadish Chandra Aryal, and library campaigner Grihaman Shrestha were honored for their contributions to the library movement.
