KATHMANDU: Despite the growing number of universities and colleges within Nepal, a significant amount of money continues to flow abroad as Nepali students pursue higher education overseas.
According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal report released by Nepal Rastra Bank, travel payments from Nepal increased by 18.1 percent, reaching Rs 223.72 billion in the fiscal year 2024/25. Of this, Rs 138.48 billion was spent specifically on education-related travel.
In comparison, travel and education payments in the previous fiscal year stood at Rs 189.43 billion and Rs 125.13 billion, respectively.
The central bank also reported that Nepal’s net services income posted a deficit of Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25—sharply up from a Rs 55.86 billion deficit the year before.
Under the service account, travel income increased by 7.7 percent to Rs 88.66 billion during the review period, up from Rs 82.33 billion in the previous fiscal year.
