Mahara produced before Kathmandu District Court

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s outgoing Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who has been facing charges over sexual misconduct, has been produced before the Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday.

Prior to this, Mahara was taken to the District Government Attorney Office.

Former Speaker Mahara was taken to the court from the Thapathali-based Norvic International Hospital where he was admitted after he complained of hypertension.

Mahara was arrested from his official residence in Baluwatar on October 6 after Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against him for allegedly raping a female employee at Parliament Secretariat.

Roshani Shahi, a victim, had lodged a complaint with the police against Mahara for attempting to rape her.

Mahara had resigned from the post following the accusation on moral ground.

Mahara has already spent nine days in police custody.

Police will be seeking an extension of the custody as they are yet to conclude the investigation. A case will be filed only after the conclusion of the investigation process.
