Ruling NC, UML call emergency meetings amid push to oust Deputy Speaker

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML have called emergency meetings of their parliamentary parties today, sparking speculation over a possible move to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar.

According to an NC lawmaker, party members have been instructed to attend the parliamentary party office between 10 am and 2 pm. The lawmaker confirmed that the sudden gathering was linked to a signature collection drive.

Similarly, the UML has directed its lawmakers to report to its parliamentary party office at 10:30 a.m.

Deputy Speaker Rana Magar has long faced demands for an investigation over allegations that she issued recommendation letters on Parliament Secretariat letterhead to support U.S. visa applications for various individuals.

Political observers believe the emergency meetings are part of a coordinated strategy by the ruling alliance to secure the necessary signatures and move forward with a motion to unseat her.
