Shankar Pokharel says current coalition will last until elections

MAHENDRANAGAR: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel said on Monday that those “suffering from the illness of instability” are spreading rumors about the government’s collapse.

Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari Nepal Kanchanpur, Pokharel stressed that the coalition between Nepali Congress and UML was built on high-level understanding and would continue until the next elections. He urged the public to trust Parliament and political parties rather than rumors.

“The government is formed by two major parties, which has brought stability,” he said. “But those with the disease of instability keep spreading rumors that the government will fall today or tomorrow.”

Pokharel criticized Congress leader Shekhar Koirala, accusing him of seeking power-sharing in government while simultaneously opposing it, which he termed “unethical.”

On media laws, he assured that the government would not introduce any legislation curbing the Right to Information. Instead, he said the Media Council Bill was being prepared to make the communication sector more systematic and secure. “No law contradicting the constitution will be made,” he clarified.

Regarding former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Pokharel said it was inappropriate for someone who had already served as head of state to return to active politics. He argued that former presidents should remain in dignified roles, linking the matter to democratic values rather than individuals.
