PM Oli criticizes Madan Bhandari Foundation he helped establish

KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) Chair KP Sharma Oli has accused certain ‘hypocrites’ of taking control of the Madan Bhandari Foundation and turning it into a tool for corruption.

While administering the oath to newly appointed officials of the ‘Madan-Aashrit Smriti Pratisthan’ at the party headquarters in Chyasal, Oli referred to the foundation as a “vessel for fraud.”

Oli, who had politically leveraged the foundation during his own difficult times within the UML, expressed frustration that it is now dominated by forces loyal to former President Bidyadevi Bhandari.

He further alleged that the foundation’s current activities run counter to the ideals of Madan Bhandari himself. The behavior and statements of the foundation’s office bearers, he claimed, confirmed this.

“Organizations established in the name of respected party leaders must walk the right path. It is essential to see if they genuinely work or become vessels for fraud,” Oli said. “Institutions named after leaders should not become schemes for deception. They must uphold the leader’s ideals.”

He emphasized the need for the foundation to be a collective institution. “The Madan Bhandari Foundation was not created by the party alone. We all created it together,” he said. “The foundation was established because we could no longer celebrate the birthdays of Madan Bhandari and Jeevaraj Aashrit.”

Oli added that the future direction of the foundation remains to be seen. Currently, Madan Bhandari’s daughter, Ushakiran, holds the position of chairperson of the foundation.
