WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. This will be their first in-person meeting on US soil since 2019.
The talks come shortly after a deadline for Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine passed without any announcement on Friday.
Trump said earlier that a potential agreement might include “some swapping of territories” benefiting both sides and suggested that a deal is “very close.”
According to CBS News, the White House is proposing a plan where Ukraine would cede some territory to Russia.
Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 in violation of international law and launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Although Russia has not secured a decisive victory, it currently controls about 20% of Ukraine’s land, while repeated Ukrainian counterattacks have so far failed to fully reclaim occupied areas.
