KATHMANDU: The Physical Infrastructure and Transport Ministry, led by Minister Devendra Dahal, has decided to make the installation of embossed vehicle number plates mandatory across Nepal.
The decision was taken during a thematic committee meeting attended by provincial ministers and secretaries.
Starting October 17, all vehicles registered, transferred, or renewed at provincial Transport Management Offices must be fitted with embossed number plates.
The Technical Support Department will assist in implementing this, and the Ministry of Home Affairs will coordinate with traffic police to ensure effective regulation and enforcement.
The meeting also discussed the printing of driver’s licenses under the Security Printing Act, 2024. Following a memorandum of understanding signed on May 23, between the Security Printing Center and the Transport Management Department, the first phase of driver’s license production is scheduled to start by the end of July. The meeting urged the Printing Center to expedite the printing process by the end of September.
With Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces already progressing with procurement for driver’s license printing, the Printing Center was requested to promptly grant permission to begin printing.
The committee also approved decisions aimed at standardizing revenue collection for the 10-year driver’s license, digitizing records, shifting payment procedures to electronic platforms, strengthening software systems, effectively clearing arrears, and unifying ride-sharing regulations.
The meeting was held under Article 22 of the Coordination and Interrelationship Act, 2020, with Minister Dahal highlighting the importance of implementing constitutional and legal provisions to strengthen federalism. He stressed that coordination among federal, provincial, and local levels is crucial to making federalism effective and delivering streamlined services to citizens.
Secretary Keshav Kumar Sharma noted that the meeting reviewed previous decisions and made significant resolutions on future directions. The session included participation from federal and provincial ministers, secretaries, and representatives from local governments.
