Bagmati’s CM fate hinges on today’s Nepali Congress meeting

HETAUDA: The Bagmati Province Parliamentary Party of the Nepali Congress is set to hold a crucial meeting today in Hetauda at 10 AM to deliberate on the no-confidence motion filed against Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama, who also serves as the party’s provincial leader.

On Friday, 21 of the party’s 37 provincial assembly members submitted a no-confidence motion at the party’s provincial office seeking Lama’s removal from the leadership position.

The motion, spearheaded by senior Congress leader and Bagmati Provincial President Indra Bahadur Baniya, alleges that Lama’s leadership has damaged the party’s image and eroded public trust in the provincial government.

According to party rules, a majority, at least 19 votes, is required to replace the parliamentary party leader.

The motion was preceded by the resignation of four Congress ministers from the provincial cabinet, signaling deepening dissatisfaction within the party. The Nepali Congress holds 8 of the 14 ministries in the Bagmati provincial government, including the post of chief minister.

In the no-confidence proposal, the dissident lawmakers argue that the public perception of the Congress has worsened due to poor governance and ineffective leadership, prompting growing public anger toward the province. They assert that under Lama’s leadership, it is no longer possible to restore the party’s credibility or meet public expectations.

If Chief Minister Lama refuses to step down voluntarily, the party is expected to resolve the dispute through a formal vote. Lama must now demonstrate that he still commands majority support within the parliamentary party to retain his leadership.

The developments have exposed sharp divisions within the provincial chapter of the Nepali Congress and could significantly alter the political equation in Bagmati Province in the coming days.
