Prachanda accuses UML of displaying double standards over cooling off period

KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has accused the CPN-UML of displaying double standards regarding the Federal Civil Service Bill.

Speaking at the inauguration of a multipurpose building at the Martyr Teachers Memorial Center in Sitapaila, Kathmandu on Saturday, Prachanda criticized UML lawmakers for proposing amendments in the National Assembly, saying it confirmed his party’s doubts about UML’s intentions.

“UML finally meowed during the cooling period,” he remarked, implying the party had shown weakness. “The amendment proposal tabled by UML lawmakers in the National Assembly has validated the concerns raised by the Maoist Centre.”

He further expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to implement agreements made with teachers during his leadership, stating that the current administration has shown no willingness to fulfill the commitments.

“Because the government was unprepared, teachers were forced to take to the streets,” he said. “They launched protests, but instead of support, they faced disrespect from those in power.”

Highlighting the Maoist Centre’s stance on the ongoing teachers’ protests, the education bill, and broader political developments, Prachanda accused the government of failing to uphold constitutional provisions.

“The constitution guarantees that teachers should not have to protest in the streets,” he said. “But due to the lack of proper implementation, they were compelled to agitate. Had the Maoist Centre been in government, teachers would not have faced such humiliation.”
