Gagan Thapa rules out future electoral alliances for Nepali Congress

CHITWAN: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that the party has already decided through its General Convention Committee that it should not enter into electoral alliances in future elections.

Speaking at a discussion organized in Chitwan on Wednesday to mark the 43rd BP Memorial Day, Thapa stressed that the party must contest elections independently, upholding its identity and principles.

The event was themed “BP’s Ideology and the Campaign for Transformation in the Party.”

Thapa, a vocal advocate of internal party reform, said the party should never again be in a position where voters are forced to support symbols other than the tree, the emblem of the Nepali Congress.

“Alliances were formed out of fear, fear of not being in government, fear that others might form a government without us, and due to an unhealthy attachment to power,” he said. “But if we step out of that mindset, the party will become stronger.”

He stressed that party leaders and members must have the courage to stand firm on ideological grounds, even if it means sacrificing short-term gains. “If we can reject the politics of convenience and stay true to our values, the party will ultimately emerge stronger,” Thapa added.

Thapa also called on Nepali Congress leaders to detach themselves from the fear of losing power and the temptation of office. “We must free ourselves from power-lust,” he said.
