Oli calls for unified UML as party reports 28% membership growth

KATHMANDU: The UML has added over 139,000 new members to its ranks through an ongoing membership drive, marking a 28 percent increase in total party membership.

The update was presented during the party’s Central Committee meeting that began Monday in Kathmandu.

According to UML’s Chief of Publicity Rajendra Gautam, the membership campaign has helped strengthen and energize the party nationwide.

“The party is moving ahead in a more robust and active manner,” he said.

During the meeting, party chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli instructed the leadership to work towards positioning UML as a “decisive national force.” He also raised the issue of introducing an age cap of 70 years and a two-term limit for executive posts within the party—proposals that, according to Gautam, received broad consensus in the decision-making process.

Oli cautioned party leaders against spreading rumors and stressed the importance of internal unity and discipline to build a stronger organization.

Party General Secretary Shankar Pokharel presented an update on the organizational state and progress of the membership drive across the country.

UML is preparing to hold its statute convention in Godavari, Kathmandu, from September 5 to 7. The convention is expected to play a critical role in revising party statutes, clarifying internal structures, expanding membership, and outlining future political strategies.
