MYAGDI: Embankment projects have been completed at four locations in Myagdi district at a total cost of Rs 36.5 million to control river erosion and flooding.
Under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project Pokhara constructed embankments and composite walls at Darwang, Tatopani, Singa, and Lamgara in the current fiscal year 2025/26.
Project engineer Narjung Gurung informed that the works aimed to protect riverbanks and nearby settlements from water-induced disasters.
A 66-meter-long, four-meter-wide, three-meter-high concrete embankment with a gabion wall has been constructed on the banks of the Myagdi River behind Saraswati Secondary School in Masar, Singa Tatopani, Beni Municipality-4.
The Sahana-BRT JV, which had signed a contract to complete the Rs 27 million project for Rs 15.5 million, finished the work before the onset of the monsoon.
Similarly, a 26-meter-long composite embankment has been built along the Myagdi River in Darwang, the administrative center of Malika Rural Municipality.
In addition, 150-meter-long gabion embankments have been completed in Singa (Beni Municipality-4) and Lamgara (Ward No. 1), along the Kaligandaki River.
The embankment projects in Darwang, Singa, and Lamgara—each with an allocated budget of Rs 70 million—were implemented through local consumer committees.
In Lamgara, the outer surface of the gabion embankment has been plastered with concrete jacketing to prevent rusting of the wire mesh.
Kamal Thapa, chairperson of the Lamgara embankment user committee, said the construction has helped protect nearby settlements, agricultural land, and the Ratnechaur Lift Drinking Water Scheme.
This fiscal year, contract agreements worth Rs 97.5 million have been signed with various construction firms for embankment works at four additional sites.
RRC JV has signed a Rs 27.1 million contract to build a 102-meter-long composite embankment to protect Singa Tatopani Bazaar. Rupal-Supreme JV will construct a 165-meter embankment in the Darwang Bus Park area under a Rs 42.1 million agreement.
Gurung Baje Mandali JV has secured a Rs 7.4 million contract to build a 50-meter embankment for the protection of the Gayatri Mandir in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-3.
Similarly, Sahna-Gopi JV will construct an 80-meter concrete embankment on the Kaligandaki River near the Kalipul settlement in Beni, under a Rs 29.59 million agreement.
Project Chief Bidurman Shrestha said that the ongoing embankment projects, which were contracted in the current fiscal year, will be completed in the next fiscal year. With embankment work gaining momentum in Beni and surrounding areas, residents of flood-prone riverbanks now feel a greater sense of safety.
