Labour Minister vows to assist in formulating modern employment strategies

KATHMANDU: Minister for Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has expressed his ministry’s commitment to supporting local governments in formulating refined and strategic employment plans tailored to their specific potential.

Responding to queries raised during the National Assembly session on Wednesday regarding the ministry’s budget allocation, Minister Bhandari said the federal government would assist provincial and local levels in identifying their unique employment prospects and devising modern and strategic plans accordingly.

He announced that starting from the upcoming fiscal year, the government would enhance the capacity of the National Vocational Training Institute to ensure skilled manpower is available to employers across the country.

Minister Bhandari also informed the assembly that the ministry has received a report on reforms for the Foreign Employment Board and would soon formulate an effective action plan based on those recommendations to make the board more efficient and impactful.

Highlighting the government’s foreign employment strategy, he said Nepal has proposed bilateral labour agreements with 13 new European countries in line with the national policy of exploring attractive foreign employment destinations.

The Minister further said efforts are underway to utilize the knowledge, skills, and capital of returning migrant workers to boost national productivity and economic output.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to integrating every worker into contribution-based social security schemes, and underscored the importance of declaring local units child-labour free. Bhandari added that workplaces will be made safer and healthier for workers, and the campaign against child labour will be expanded nationwide.
