Safe and dignified migration is Nepal’s shared commitment: Minister Bhandari

KATHMANDU: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has said that safe and dignified migration is Nepal’s shared commitment.

Speaking at the opening session of the Asia-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dialogue on safe, dignified, and well-managed migration held in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister Bhandari called on all partner countries to work together to implement safe, regular, and orderly migration.

Presenting the views of labour-sending countries like Nepal, he stressed that such dialogues are important to strengthen understanding and cooperation between labour-sending and labour-receiving nations.

He highlighted the need for all countries to ensure basic human rights for migrants while implementing the 23 goals of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).

Minister Bhandari also informed that Nepal’s Safe Migration Program has now been expanded to all 77 districts of the country, and said the government is committed to making its implementation more effective.

He thanked the Indian government for its support in rescuing Nepali workers during the recent Iran-Israel conflict, and emphasized the need to build stronger partnerships during times of crisis.

Minister Bhandari further shared that the government plans to involve returnee migrant workers in productive sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and industry.

He added that Nepal is learning from international experiences such as South Korea’s reunification efforts in the 1960s, Switzerland’s development model, Bangladesh’s garment-focused strategy, and India’s reverse migration initiatives.
