KATHMANDU: Thirty-five Nepali nationals held captive in Kashipur, Uttarakhand, India, have been successfully rescued, according to the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi.
In a statement issued Saturday, the embassy said the individuals were lured to India with promises of attractive job opportunities. Upon arrival, they were subjected to physical and psychological abuse, and money was extorted from them under various pretexts.
The rescue operation was carried out in coordination with the Uttarakhand Police and Indian social organization KIN India. The victims had reportedly been trafficked through border areas and held against their will in the Indian state.
Local authorities have arrested several individuals involved in the incident, and further investigation is underway.
The embassy confirmed that the rescued individuals are now in safe shelter and are receiving medical checkups, legal support, and assistance for repatriation to Nepal.
