Budget not favorable to farmers: Shakti Bahadur Basnet

KATHMANDU: Deputy General Secretary of CPN (Maoist Centre), Shakti Bahadur Basnet, has criticized the current budget for failing to address the needs and concerns of farmers.

Speaking at a program organized at Sambad Dabali on Friday, Basnet said the budget document lacked adequate provisions to support the agricultural community. The former Home Minister also expressed his party’s commitment to fulfilling its duties while remaining in opposition.

Basnet referred to a recent two-point agreement as a reminder for responsible conduct by the party. He warned that if the government does not implement the agreement within 30 days, the party is prepared to initiate street protests. “We are hopeful that a high-level investigation committee will be formed soon,” he added.

Linking the current farmers’ movement to the historical people’s revolution that began in 2038, Basnet suggested that the movement could evolve with new direction and form in response to changing social values and needs.

Meanwhile, Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav defended the budget during the first federal council meeting of the Janata Samajbadi Party on the same day. He dismissed claims that the budget favored specific groups or sectors, highlighting its inclusivity and focus on development.

Yadav stated that essential sectors such as drinking water, irrigation, health, education, and infrastructure were prioritized. He added that the budget aims to promote economic reform, generate employment, and ensure social justice.
