Over 2,300 electric vehicles enter Nepal via Birgunj border

PARSA: A total of 2,385 small and large electric vehicles (EVs), valued at Rs 1.84 billion, have been imported through the Birgunj border in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, according to the Birgunj Customs Office.

The customs office also reported that it has collected Rs 2.7 billion in revenue from EV imports during this period.

Deepak Lamichhane, Chief Customs Administrator at Birgunj Customs Office, noted a steady rise in electric vehicle imports. “While fuel-powered vehicles still make up a larger share of imports through this border, the volume of electric vehicles has been quite satisfactory,” he said.

Breaking down the data, 193 electric jeeps, cars, and vans with a power capacity of up to 50 kilowatts, worth Rs 271 million, were imported.

Additionally, 50 EVs with power ratings between 51 and 100 kilowatts, valued at Rs 134.2 million, and 36 vehicles with capacities between 100 and 200 kilowatts, worth Rs 247.5 million, were brought in.

The largest segment of imports included 1,700 electric motorcycles, valued at Rs 407.8 million.

The rising import of electric vehicles reflects growing demand for cleaner and more sustainable transportation alternatives in Nepal.
