MUSTANG: The number of domestic and international tourists visiting Mustang has surged significantly due to improved accessibility along the national pride project road connecting Beni–Jomsom–Korala.
With much of the road between Myagdi and Mustang now blacktopped, travel to the high Himalayan district has become more convenient, encouraging a steady influx of visitors.
The district, rich in religious, cultural, and natural attractions, is emerging as a major tourist hub in Nepal.
Key pilgrimage sites such as Muktinath Temple, Kagbeni Dham, and Damodar Kunda draw spiritual travelers, while destinations like Lo Manthang Palace, Korala Pass, Dhumba Lake, Ghar Gumba, Marpha, and Jomsom appeal to those seeking unique cultural and scenic experiences.
The region’s distinct geography, biodiversity, ancient monasteries, and traditional heritage have made it a must-visit destination for many.
According to data from the District Police Office, 678,536 tourists visited Mustang in the first eleven months of the current fiscal year, a 33% increase from 454,326 in the previous year.
Among this year’s visitors, 539,872 were Nepali and 138,664 were foreigners. In comparison, last fiscal year saw 354,927 domestic and 99,399 foreign tourists.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chhiring Kippa Lama noted a 34.25% increase in domestic visitors and a 28.31% rise in foreign arrivals compared to the previous year.
The highest domestic tourist inflows were recorded in November and March, with 99,176 and 89,344 visitors respectively. For foreign tourists, May and April saw the highest numbers, with 28,372 and 26,029 visitors respectively.
Most tourists visit Mustang to worship at Muktinath Temple and perform ancestral rites at Kagbeni. About one-fourth of domestic pilgrims traveling to Muktinath also continue further north to explore Upper Mustang and Korala.
Notably, 80% of foreign tourists to Mustang are Indian nationals, visiting mainly for religious purposes. The remaining 20% come from 72 different countries.
As accessibility improves and awareness of Mustang’s unique offerings spreads, the district is poised to become an even more prominent destination in Nepal’s tourism landscape.
