NRN Sujan Katwal awarded prestigious MBE by UK government

LONDON: Non-resident Nepali businessman and social worker Sujan Katwal has been awarded the prestigious MBE medal by the British government. Katwal was awarded the prestigious ‘Member of the Order of the British Empire’ (MBE) in the list of various awards made public on the occasion of the British monarch’s birthday.

Speaking to the media after the announcement, Katwal said that he was very happy, while dedicating the honour to his team, family and community that inspired him to serve society.

Katwal was recognized for his special contribution to the community through social service. He had provided free food to more than 250,000 people during the COVID-19 pandemic and had played an important role in the welfare of the community through various other social works.

He had also been included in the list of 100 influential people in Britain just a few months ago. The MBE award, established by King George V in 1917, is presented by the Royal Palace to individuals who have made a lasting impact on society.

Prior to this, mountaineer and former Gurkha army personnel, Hari Budha Magar, had received the MBE last year, and mountaineer Nirmal Purja in 2018.

Katuwal runs the Panas Gorkha Restaurant in South London, UK, and is active in social service through Panas Helping Hands Charity. Born in Biratnagar, Nepal, Katwal came to the UK in 1998.
