KATHMANDU: Elections for the new leadership of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), the student wing affiliated with the CPN-UML, are scheduled to take place today.
According to Madhav Dhungel, a member of the general convention presidium, voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. using electronic voting machines.
He informed that the final list of candidates was published on Wednesday, and the data entry of candidate names into the machines has been completed.
In the 24th national convention, Prakash Poudel and Dr. Sujan Kadariya are contesting for the post of president. For the open vice-president position, Bikash Shrestha, Rajkumar Dhakal, Bharat Singh Dhami, Dharmendra KC, and Ganesh Bahadur Shahi have filed their nominations.
Similarly, Sujita Dhital, Anjana Siwakoti, Bhawani Bajgain, and Aarti Bhattarai are contesting for the position of woman vice-president, while RK Romash, Deepak Dhami, and Sunil Kandel are vying for the post of general secretary.
Outgoing president Samik Badal stated that the adoption of electronic voting machines aims to speed up the process and avoid the inconvenience of paper ballots.
According to Laxman Rimal, director of Ram-Laxman Innovations, 43 electronic machines will be used in the election.
A total of 1,543 delegates are expected to cast their votes. With 519 candidates competing for various positions, it is estimated that each voter will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete the voting process.
Notably, this is the first time ANNFSU is conducting elections with an age cap of 32 years for candidates.
