Corruption in sewer construction contract: Case filed against former KMC official Pariyar and six others

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against seven individuals, including former Chief Administrative Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and current Director General of the Department of Information and Broadcasting, Pradeep Pariyar.

The case concerns alleged irregularities in the contract for sewer construction under the Samakhusi Corridor, from Basundhara to Maipi.

Alongside Pariyar, the accused include members of the bid evaluation committee—Directors Rabinman Shrestha, Shiva Raj Adhikari, Basanta Acharya, Namaraj Dhakal, Engineer Janardan Giri, and Assistant Director of the Procurement Unit Uttam Dahal.

According to the CIAA, the evaluation process was deliberately manipulated, and false details were presented to disqualify the bidder—Samanantar Sewa Pvt. Ltd.—from being awarded the contract. The commission has also stated that the accused were found to be involved in a previous corruption case related to the same contract.

Each of the seven individuals has been charged with causing financial damage amounting to over Rs 43.1 million. The CIAA concluded that the misrepresentation and biased evaluation reports were intentionally prepared, causing loss to public property.

The case has been filed at the Special Court under the Prevention of Corruption Act, seeking action against all accused for abuse and misuse of public property.
