Nepal performs first successful gender reassignment surgery

KATHMANDU: Nepal has successfully conducted its first gender reassignment surgery at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj.

A 25-year-old transgender woman from Janakpur underwent the reconstruction of female genitalia using male genital tissue, marking a historic milestone in the country’s medical history.

The surgery was part of a special surgical camp organized by the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, focused on serving the transgender community. In addition to gender reassignment procedures, facial and breast surgeries were also performed during the camp.

Hospital spokesperson and Associate Professor Dr. Gopal Sedhai said this service will now be available regularly in Nepal, eliminating the need for patients to seek such complex and expensive procedures abroad.

“This development brings significant relief to the transgender community by enabling them to access vital, gender-affirming surgeries within the country,” he said.

The surgery was performed by a team led by international plastic surgeon Dr. Eliza Hamidian Jahromi, in coordination with Department Head Prof. Dr. Jayanman Shrestha, alongside the hospital’s full plastic surgery and anesthesia teams.

Dr. Shrestha also announced plans to establish a dedicated Gender Affirming Clinic at TUTH to provide ongoing, regular services for the transgender community.
