Land Commission officials brief Prime Minister on progress

KATHMANDU: Officials from the Land Problem Resolution Commission have briefed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on the commission’s progress so far.

During a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the commission reported that it has been working in coordination with all three tiers of government to identify landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized settlers.

The commission’s efforts include data collection, verification, surveying, mapping, dispute resolution, land registration, and certificate distribution.

In the presence of Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation Balaram Adhikari, Commission Chair Hari Prasad Rijal informed the Prime Minister that criteria have been developed to identify landless and squatter populations.

According to the commission, individuals who have not received residential or government land for the past 10 years may be classified as landless. Similarly, unorganized settlers must have resided on government, public, or forest land for at least 10 years to qualify.

Commission officials noted that if the bill to amend certain land-related laws is passed, it will facilitate the commission’s work.

Expressing optimism that the bill currently under consideration in Parliament will be passed soon, Prime Minister Oli directed the commission to accelerate and systematize its identification efforts.
