Opposition steps back from demanding Home Minister’s resignation, but insists on probe committee
Amid continued disruption in Parliament over the visit visa scandal, opposition parties appear to have softened their stance on demanding Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak’s resignation, but remain firm on their call for a parliamentary investigation committee. Although discussions were held throughout Sunday between ruling and opposition parties to break the parliamentary deadlock, no formal agreement was reached. The House meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. and later rescheduled twice, eventually convened at 6:30 p.m. but was adjourned without entering the agenda, following continued obstruction by opposition lawmakers.
CIAA files corruption case against 18 individuals, including Nepal Telecom MD Pahadi
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against 18 individuals, including Nepal Telecom (NT) Managing Director Sangita Pahadi. The case has been registered at the Special Court, with the CIAA alleging irregularities related to Telecom’s billing system, maintenance fees, and other areas. According to sources, the Commission has claimed a loss of Rs 330 million to the state.
PM Oli alleges conspiracy against UML–NC power-sharing deal
Prime Minister (PM) and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has accused political opponents of attempting to undermine the coalition between the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress (NC). Speaking at the 24th National Convention of ANNFSU—the UML’s student wing—in Kathmandu on Sunday, Oli said the UML currently leads the government but acknowledged that the leadership is temporary. He stated that, according to the agreement between the two major parties, power will be handed over to the Nepali Congress in 13 months.
Speaker’s talks with major party whips fail to resolve House deadlock
Discussions led by Speaker Devraj Ghimire with the chief whips of the three major parties on ending the ongoing obstruction in Parliament ended inconclusively on Sunday. The Speaker held talks at Singha Durbar with Nepali Congress Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Kumar Bartaula, and Maoist Centre Chief Whip Hitraj Pandey. During the meeting, both the ruling parties and the main opposition reiterated their firm stances.
Deuba asks Prachanda to support in navigating current political crisis
Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged support from Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to help move parliamentary proceedings forward amid the current political deadlock. Prachanda visited Deuba at his residence in Budhanilkantha on Friday, where Deuba urged him to assist in navigating the increasingly complex political situation. Prachanda, in turn, said he would discuss the matter with other opposition leaders before making any decisions.
Gold price down by Rs 3,000 per tola today
The price of gold dropped in the local market today. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers, gold has decreased by Rs. 3,000 per tola. As per the Federation, gold is being traded at Rs. 190,700 per tola today, down from Rs. 193,700 per tola on Friday. The price of silver also declined. It was traded at Rs. 2,145 per tola today, according to the association.
Beni-Jomsom-Korala road sees 84 percent progress
The Beni–Jomsom–Korala road section under the Kaligandaki Corridor, a key north–south connectivity project, has achieved 84 percent physical progress. Since its inception, the Korala Road Project has signed budget contracts worth Rs 7.97 billion for 43 sub-projects, of which Rs 6.64 billion has already been spent. Project Chief Dhruba Jha stated that 43 sub-projects have been implemented so far in the current fiscal year.
Preparations underway to remove Subedi from leadership of pro-monarchy movement
The Joint People’s Movement Committee, formed to restore the monarchy, is set to be reconstituted. The current committee, led by Nawaraj Subedi, will be reshaped to include more youth leaders, according to the committee’s spokesperson, Swagat Nepal. He said the reconstitution will also involve leaders from other parties supporting the monarchy.
Nepal performs first successful gender reassignment surgery
Nepal has successfully conducted its first gender reassignment surgery at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgunj. A 25-year-old transgender woman from Janakpur underwent the reconstruction of female genitalia using male genital tissue, marking a historic milestone in the country’s medical history. The surgery was part of a special surgical camp organized by the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, focused on serving the transgender community.
Over 2,000 taxpayers suspended in Chitwan for failing to submit VAT details
A total of 2,373 value-added tax (VAT) payers registered at the Internal Revenue Office in Bharatpur have been suspended for failing to submit their VAT statements for the past six months. According to Information Officer Bimal Paudel, around 2,400 registered VAT payers had not submitted their tax details, and only 27 complied after the department issued a notice on April 24. As a result, the operations of the suspended taxpayers have been halted, and the public has been advised not to engage in business transactions with them.
Provincial government provides aid to Bajura fire victims
The Sudurpaschim Provincial Government has announced Rs 4 million in financial assistance for fire victims in Bajura. The decision was made during a meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Control Council, chaired by Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah. According to Chief Minister Shah, the funds will be disbursed to Budhiganga Municipality, with the possibility of additional support once a full assessment of the damages is completed.
2 women killed, 1 injured in Dolakha jeep accident
Two women were killed and one person injured in a Bolero jeep accident in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-4, Depung, Dolakha. According to the District Police Office, Dolakha, the vehicle (Ba 16 Cha 7651) was en route from Singati Bazaar in Kalinchowk Rural Municipality to Jhanku when it lost control and veered off the road on Friday evening. The deceased have been identified as Dolma Sherpa, 32, and Phulmaya Sherpa, 45, both residents of the same locality. Police Inspector Shriram Timalsina confirmed that both women died during treatment at the Pashupati Chaulagain Memorial Hospital in Charikot.
One killed in tipper accident in Boudha, driver arrested from Kavre
An elderly man died after being hit by a tipper in Ramhiti, Boudha, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-6, late Saturday night. The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. when a tipper (Bagmati Province-01-006 Kha 5508) struck the 65-year-old man, who is yet to be identified, according to SP Deepak Giri, spokesperson for the Valley Traffic Police Office. The driver fled the scene with the vehicle after the incident, according to police. Ajay Shrestha, 28, of Mandandeupur Municipality-6, Kavre, has been arrested in connection with the accident.
One dead in motorcycle accident in Jhapa
One person died in a motorcycle accident last night at Sano Kerkha in Kamal Rural Municipality-3 along the East-West Highway. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Khagendra Bahadur Khadka of the District Police Office, the deceased has been identified as Armed Police Sub-Inspector Puran Lal Rajbanshi, who was stationed at the Ilam Armed Police Force Nepal (BOP). The motorcycle (Pra 1-02-0052PA 7029) was heading toward Kerkha from Birtamod when it lost control and crashed.
Construction of Upper Myagdi-1 Hydropower Project in full swing
The construction of the headrace tunnel for the 53.5 MW Upper Myagdi-1 Hydropower Project, located in Dhawalagiri and Malika Rural Municipalities, is progressing rapidly. Tunnel excavation has begun from the outlet site at Bharbang in Malika Rural Municipality-7, where the powerhouse will be situated. At the tunnel excavation inauguration, Malika Rural Municipality Chair Beg Prasad Garbuja urged timely project completion by ensuring the deployment of sufficient manpower and equipment. Tunnel digging is currently underway from four points across the project site.
National Dalit Round Table Conference to be held in Kathmandu
In a significant step toward Dalit emancipation and social equity in Nepal, more than 130 Dalit rights advocates from across the country will gather in Kathmandu from June 13 to 15, 2025, for the first-ever National Dalit Round Table Conference. The conference aims to bring together voices from Nepal’s seven provinces—including activists, scholars, and civil society leaders—to build a shared vision for Dalit dignity, equality, inclusion, and emancipation.
19-year-old dies after drowning in Rapti canal
A 19-year-old youth has died after drowning in the Rapti river canal in Banke district. Kamal Darji, a resident of Nepalgunj Sub-metropolitan City-7, drowned in the canal at Agaiya, Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality-2, according to the District Police Office, Banke. Eyewitnesses alerted the police after Darji, who worked as a tailor, went missing while swimming on Saturday afternoon.
African swine fever and lumpy skin disease confirmed in Mechinagar
Cases of African swine fever and lumpy skin disease have been confirmed in domestic animals in Mechinagar Municipality. According to Chief Administrative Officer Agni Prasad Adhikari, lumpy skin disease has been detected in Wards 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, and 14, while African swine fever has been confirmed at pig farms in Ward 6. Technical staff from the municipality’s Animal Services Unit have been mobilized for testing, treatment, and disease surveillance. “We have also requested necessary support from Koshi Province and federal government agencies,” Adhikari added.
Siddhababa Tunnel achieves 54 percent physical progress
The Siddhababa Tunnel, a national pride project in Palpa, has achieved 54 percent physical progress and 48 percent financial progress. Work has accelerated following the tunnel’s breakthrough, according to project engineer Savita Gyawali. Currently, ‘invert and lining’ work is progressing rapidly. Of the total 1,089 meters of the main tunnel, 990 meters of invert and 660 meters of the 1,126-meter lining have been completed. In Bypass-1, out of 151 meters, 145 meters of invert and 118 meters of lining are finished.
Land Commission officials brief Prime Minister on progress
Officials from the Land Problem Resolution Commission have briefed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on the commission’s progress so far. During a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the commission reported that it has been working in coordination with all three tiers of government to identify landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized settlers. The commission’s efforts include data collection, verification, surveying, mapping, dispute resolution, land registration, and certificate distribution.
President highlights Nepal’s potential for sports tourism
President Ram Chandra Paudel has said that Nepal holds significant potential for the development of sports tourism. He made the remarks during a meeting with officials from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) at the Office of the President in Shital Niwas today.
Nepal’s mountains cannot be described in words: NA Chair
National Assembly (NA) Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal has said that Nepal’s majestic mountains and ranges are beyond description and that linking them with adventure tourism would create a meaningful global identity for the country. Speaking after observing the photo exhibition “Mountain Tourism: Our Pride, Our Identity” organized by the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) to mark the 18th Republic Day, Dahal said, “For the past three years, RSS has introduced and promoted the country through various thematic photo exhibitions. These exhibitions have provided the public an opportunity to appreciate and understand Nepal’s invaluable natural heritage.”
