CIAA notifies parliament on corruption case against Madhav Kumar Nepal, automatic suspension follows

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has officially filed a corruption case against former Prime Minister and current Chair of CPN (Unified Socialist) Madhav Kumar Nepal, along with 92 others, in relation to alleged irregularities in land acquisition for Patanjali Ayurved in Kavre.

A formal letter from the CIAA notifying the case has reached the Parliament Secretariat, according to Speaker Devraj Ghimire’s press advisor Shekhar Adhikari.

Madhav Nepal, who was elected to the House of Representatives from Rautahat-3, is now automatically suspended from his parliamentary role as per legal provisions.

The CIAA has demanded Rs 185.8 million in restitution from Nepal and others in the case.

According to Section 30 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2002, and Article 244 of the Constitution of Nepal, any public officeholder — including members of parliament — automatically faces suspension if a corruption case is filed against them in court by the CIAA.

The suspension is immediate and applies even before a verdict is reached, emphasizing the principle of accountability for public officeholders.

The CIAA’s move marks a major political and legal development, as Madhav Nepal becomes the first former prime minister in recent history to be suspended from parliament due to a filed corruption case.
