Pro-monarchy forces announce Kathmandu bandh on Monday

KATHMANDU: Following the arrest of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-Nepal) Chairman Kamal Thapa, RPP Member of Parliament (MP) Deepak Singh, and other party members, the pro-monarchy forces have announced a shutdown of the Kathmandu Valley on Monday.

The Joint People’s Movement Committee, led by Nawaraj Subedi, issued a press release on Sunday condemning the arrests, which occurred during what they described as a peaceful protest.

The Committee accused police of acting inhumanely during the detention of Thapa, Singh, and others.

It has called for their immediate release and announced a valley-wide shutdown on June 2 (Monday) in protest.

“Protesting the government’s brutal repression, we have been forced to change the form of our movement,” the statement read.

“In this context, we have announced a Valley shutdown on Monday. I urge all those involved in the movement to gather in their respective neighborhoods and public squares to actively participate in the shutdown,” said the statement signed by Subedi.

RPP Nepal leaders and activists, including Chairman Thapa, were detained after a royalist demonstration began in the Narayan Chaur area of the capital on Sunday. Protesters attempted to march towards Baluwatar, prompting police action.
