Supreme Court to hear writ against NRB Governor Poudel today

KATHMANDU: The writ petition filed against newly appointed Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Dr. Bishwo Poudel is scheduled for hearing today, Wednesday (May 28), at the Supreme Court.

The petition was lodged on the second day of his appointment but was formally registered by the Supreme Court only on Tuesday, following five days of internal review and discussion.

Advocates Anantaraj Luitel, Pratibha Upreti, and Bishal Thapa filed the petition, arguing that Dr. Poudel’s appointment violates the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058.

They claim he was appointed due to political affiliations, bypassing legal and competitive procedures.

The petitioners have also requested an interim order to prevent Governor Poudel from introducing policies of national importance or signing official notes, asserting that his appointment was unlawful.

They contend that Dr. Poudel lacks the required academic qualifications in economics, monetary policy, commerce, or banking as specified in Section 15 of the Act.

Instead, his academic background is in rural development economics, which, they argue, does not meet the legal criteria.

The petition further alleges that members of the recommendation committee resigned and were subsequently reappointed to serve vested interests, compromising the integrity of the appointment process.

The petitioners have demanded the cancellation of the appointment.
