Education Minister seeks one week to finalize school education bill amid ongoing talks with teachers

KATHMANDU: Education Minister Raghuraj Pant has requested one week to move forward with the long-awaited School Education Bill, citing ongoing discussions with teachers’ unions.

During Sunday’s meeting of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee under the House of Representatives, Minister Pant said he remains engaged in continuous dialogue with teachers based on a nine-point agreement and needs additional time to consolidate consensus.

He assured committee members that the government is committed to honoring the agreement and that previous understandings raised by the Teachers’ Federation are also being considered.

Committee Chair Amar Bahadur Thapa instructed the government to present a clear stance on the bill in the next meeting, scheduled a week later. Thapa also warned that failure to heed teachers’ demands could provoke public protests—not just against the government but potentially the parliamentary committee as well.

The committee also decided to conduct an on-site visit to Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology on May 29 and 30.
